Custom Saddles

Our Charter Oak tm Custom Saddles are built from the tree up to rider and horse specifications and measurements, with features to meet your every wish and need. We can create any saddle you can conceive. (How could we photograph something so individually and personally made.)

Description

We use only the finest materials from throughout the world.  Our leather trees are guaranteed for life.  Smith-Worthington has made saddles in Hartford, Connecticut since Normand Smith founded our company in 1794 (this is no typo - George Washington was President).

We use many of the same materials and methods today as he did then - methods unknown to or ignored by most of today's saddlers:

  • “fired” (pre-stretched) pure linen webbing provides a comfortable hammock seat that never sags
  • protective abrasion-guard wear leather between metal tree components and webbing
  • soft 100% virgin wool flock conforms to your horse's back and allows adjustment for proper fit
  • full grain aniline finished and well fat-liquored leathers - never pigmented (painted) - allow you to properly care for the leather and keep oils in the fibers.  There is no finish to peel off, no paint to cover the leather's natural beauty, therefore, only perfect leather is used in our saddles.  This high quality leather actually improves with use and proper care

Many of our saddles come back to our factory after 30, 40 or 50 years, only needing billets or re-flocking.

We, also, build custom saddles for handicapped riders, working with their instructors and therapists to provide the features each individual needs.

Meet with your local tack shop to discuss your saddle requirements.
